What is a Bone Mineral Density Test?
A Bone Mineral Density test measures the amount of mineral in your bones.
The examination is commonly performed using Dual Energy X ray Absorptiometry (DXA). It uses a very low dose of X ray energy to measure bone density, most commonly in areas such as the hip and lower spine.
The results can help your health care provider evaluate your bone health and determine whether you may have low bone density or osteoporosis.

Preparing for Your BMD TEST
There is usually very little preparation required for a bone density scan.
For your appointment:
• Wear comfortable clothing without metal around the waist or hip area when possible
• Avoid clothing with metal zippers, buttons, buckles or underwire that may interfere with the examination
• Bring your health card and imaging requisition
• Tell your technologist if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant
You should also let us know if you have recently undergone an examination involving contrast material or certain nuclear medicine procedures, as this may affect when your BMD test should be performed.
